Sexed semen techonology is a processed semen of bulls, in which Y chromosomes is removed from the semen of bull.

  • Y chromosome is the main factor which lead to the birth of male calf.
  • This techonology is used to increase chance of female calf to be born.
  • This technology is implemented by Artificial Insemination.

There is two different ways/methods to produce sexed semen:

  1. In one way, The X and Y chromosomes are separated, Y chromosome is discarded and X chromosome is retained.
  2. In this, Y chromosomes are killed altogether.

Flow Cytometer(cell sorter) is an instrument which is used for both the methods.

This technology is pioneered by US based companies.

Advantages:

Safe Technology

Less number of stray cattle roaming in the roads

Helps in propagation of indigenous breeds

Disease free offsprings

Limitations:

Expensive Technology

Not 100 percent efficient

Need for standardization to Indian conditions

To use this, we have to pay huge royalty

Current scenario in India:

Government of India proposed 5 sexed semen plants in India, of which three are implemented (Maharashtra - 2, Uttarakhand - 1)  and two more is yet to come in  Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat. Punjab government is planned to setup sexed semen plant in Nabha, Patiala under Rashtriya Gokul Mission.
